Gretna's charge towards the Second Division title continued with a workmanlike 1-0 victory over Raith Rovers at Stark's Park, the team's being separated by a first-half strike from former Kirkcaldy favourite Steve Tosh.

With their confidence high after back-to-back victories over Forfar and Peterhead, Raith began positively and striker Brian Fairbairn raced clear of the Gretna defence in the fourth minute only to see his low shot slide narrowly wide of Alan Main's right-hand post.

Gretna withstood the early onslaught, however, and opened the scoring in the 15th minute through a superb individual effort from Tosh. The one-time Raith man collected the ball in midfield then ran unchallenged through the static home defence before firing a low angular shot beyond Ally Brown.

Raith were denied an equaliser shortly afterwards thanks to a brilliant double save by Alan Main, the veteran Gretna keeper parrying a fiercely-struck angular drive from Paul McManus and then blocking a close-range header from the on-rushing Mark Campbell.

Gretna pushed hard for a second goal in the early stages of the second half, and only an outstanding save by Brown from Alan Jenkins' header kept Rovers in the game.

Rovers rarely looked like equalising as the league leaders assumed control, their only meaningful effort in the second half being a McManus volley which drifted harmlessly wide.
